Engadget Podcast 052 - 11.15.2005

Podcast logoA surprising amount of news going on in the content provider market between NBC Universal partnering with DirecTV for digital programming distribution, CBS getting in bed with Comcast for the same, and Nick and Cartoon Network pairing off with Hasbro on the VuGo — everyone trying their hand, however poorly, at alternative methods of getting their content out there digitally. But Ed Colligan also took some time to weigh in on Palm's commitment to the PalmOS in future devices, some of which we're hoping might show up on Voce, the new Luxury MVNO just announced. Of course, there's also the grim news that the Revolution won't have HD support or play in the same price range as its competitors, but feel free to call in to comment (or shoot us a question) about this or anything else at 888-ENGADGET!

Engadget Podcast 051 - 11.8.2005

Podcast logoA lot of cellphone news this week (so what else is new?) but don't worry, you won't have to hear us drone on too much about leaked info on the new Treos and Sprint Nextel cable company content partnerships; we've also got the skinny on Sony's new T9 camera with optical image stabilization, what's the latest heard on Intel Apples, MIT's dubiously helpful WiFi services, and, of course, more listener voicemail. (Have you called in yet? No? Well, listen in and leave a message!)

Engadget Podcast 050 - 11.1.2005

Podcast logoPodcast fifty, wow. Can you believe we've produced that many of these things? It's been a quite a ride and a lot of fun, believe us, but we ain't planning on stopping any time soon. The program's grown and changed so much since our first episode, but instead of getting too gushy on you we're just gonna hit the news hard like we do every week. We're not without treats, however: special guest Ross Rubin sits in to give an ineffably outstanding reading of the latest edition of his Switched On column, "The Maven," also followed by some Engadget phone-ins, and a wee look into the past year of the Podcast. But we never could have hit fifty without the ceaseless support of our listenership; thanks so much, everybody, and here's to another fifty episodes!

Engadget Podcast 049 - 10.25.2005

Podcast logoA lot of high def news going down this week, what with Apple releasing their new high def PowerBooks (the ones that are sure to be among the last we'll see before they go Intel), the Power Mac G5 Quad (which has support for up to 4 hi def Cinema Displays), Netflix postponing their online movie download service, and, of course, the latest studio to have a format-affair on their one and only: Warner Bros. But we've also got the details on Nokia's latest lineup, the L'Amour series, as well as our experiences at the Intel Innovation Destination event in New York. Podcast 49 is go!

Engadget Podcast 048 - 10.18.2005

Podcast logoWe covered some serious ground on Apple's product announcements last week, as well as at DigitalLife on Friday. There wasn't a whole ton going down, but some interesting business with T-Mobile and their new Sidekick IIs, a brief run-in with Apple VP Greg Joswiak, and a little bit of hands-on with the Zen Vision and Akimbo's new Media Center software. Of course the big news, however, was Sony Ericsson's new decked out Walkman phone, the W900, which perhaps we go into a little too much detail on. But that's why you listen in, right?

Podcast logoApple addicts, Mac nuts, iPod fans—gather ye round and tune in! We've got a special mini-Podcast for you this week with nothing but our take on the new iPod (with video), iTunes 6.0 (with video), and the new iMac G5 (with video Front Row and the Apple Remote). Trust us, there's a lot more going on here than just a few new products. Not an Apple fan? Well, that's cool, we try to remain platform-agnostic ourselves, but while there's still a lot of Podcasty goodness in here, be forewarned if you can't stand any more talk of MP3 players not Apple made, then this may not be the Podcast for you.

Engadget Podcast 047 - 10.11.2005

Podcast logoWell, wouldn't you know it—we got our hands on a real life Xbox 360, and is there ever a lot to talk about between the killer graphics, fluid game play, and Microsoft's well-laid plans to take over the gaming world this fall. But we're also well worked up over Apple's big announcement this week (what ever could it be?), and we've only got about fifteen theories as to what could be going down. Last, but certainly not least, we've got a little something on the results of the DARPA Grand Challenge this weekend—besides being impressed with the performance of all the teams involved, we were perhaps most impressed that we didn't even have occasion to laugh at even a little bit o' wacky robot hijinks this year. Ah well, there's always DGC06 for us—but for you there's Podcast 47, check check it!

But Palm's not the only game in town right now, what with Nintendo and their new Revolution controller, Sony with their ongoing battle with Toshiba for the next-generation optical disc standard, and a recap of our visit to the Canon Expo 2005 in New York. We even have a little Samsung hard drive-cellphone action to bookend our San Franciscan/CTIA Podcast this week. We're back!

Engadget Podcast 043 - 09.12.2005

Podcast logoIt's a little late for being a day early, but it's always a bit of an interesting week when Apple launches a new round of products. Between their new nano and the much belated release of the Motorola ROKR E1 iTunes phone, we weren't exactly want for new portable music offerings—but Sony went ahead and topped us off anyway with their new lineup of 1.8-inch and 1-inch drive based Walkman audio players (which also signaled the death of SonicStage). Not to be outdone by the audio space, however, our old friend PalmSource rocked the boat a bit by finally managing to get themselves bought by, well, freaking someone (a company called Access, actually). Just another week in the life of Engadget.

Podcast logoIt's been a rough week for our fellow Americans down in the Gulf Coast, but we're doing what we can over here at Engadget to alleviate the suffering—including a $1,000 donation to hurricane relief funds, not including what we're pulling together with Weblogs, Inc. But the gadget news presses on, and so we must discuss the finer points of Sony's big laptop launches (and their first forays into using SD in their machines' media readers), Locationfree TV (without the TV), and the skinny on Nikon's new WiFi-enabled cameras. Oh, and a little on what it's like to fool around with the HTC Universal—see, at Engadget we kiss and tell.

Engadget Podcast 041 - 08.30.2005

Podcast logoIt was a sad week in Engadget when one of our favorite companies, Rio, announced their defeat in the ultra-competitive portable audio market, but we couldn't help but get a chuckle out of Creative's worm troubles with the Zen Neeon, or Samsung's 19-inch monster of a laptop, the M70. The home entertainment world had a lot going on too, between Intel's VIIV spec, TiVo's first quarter in the black, and talks between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps dead once again (for good, for reals this time). But we're gonna have to say the biggest news this week may just have been our new enhanced Podcast program in AAC—check it out if you subscribe to us in iTunes, or download it from the link below!

Take Sony's Walkman Bean, for instance, which leaves us a bit perplexed, while Canon's camera inundation and Sony Ericsson's new P-series  phone leave us reeling. Also, we'd like to extend a thanks to all our people who entered the Iced-out Gadget Contest—we got some good ones, so keep your eyes peeled—and for those who didn't get their entry in, try your hand at our Engadget T-Shirt Design Contest!
