Tired of all the DROID talk? Well, tough cookies, mister. Nilay, Paul and Josh have a lot to say on the subject, and you're just going to have to sit there and take it. Or you could skip the first 40 minutes of this week's podcast, but that's just a recipe for regret. If you do stick it out you'll be treated to some unusually candid discussion of Josh's facial hair and other more pertinent questions picked from the USTREAM discussion that will almost certainly frighten you straight.
For this week's installment of the Engadget Podcast, we present the audio stream from our recent Engadget Show, featuring a one-on-one with Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer! We encourage you to go and check out the actual show if you haven't seen it, but for those of you on the move who can't be looking at a screen, here's the next best thing. Of course, Josh, Paul, and Nilay still tear through the week in news (and what a week!), and as a bonus, you get to hear some tunes from the ever so talented Bit Shifter. So what are you waiting for? Sit back, crank the PMP, and prepare to enter nerd heaven.
Everyone all strapped in? Okay, take a deep breath. Now exhale....slowly. It's the Engadget Podcast. Just what you need after a tense week of work, school, and being extremely worried about a boy who was not actually trapped in a killer spaceship balloon. Instead, join Josh, Paul and Nilay as they break down the week in news, starting with the Sidekick situation and cruising past the Motorola CLIQ, the BlackBerry Storm 2, Walt Mossberg's disregard for anything not the iPhone, and wrapping up with the rumored Barnes and Noble ebook reader and the runup to Windows 7. There -- don't you feel better?
Sure, you could try to make your way through the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 and an onslaught of Android news all by yourself, but then you'd just be alone and sad. And who would be there to comfort and hold you and tell you how terribly overpriced the VAIO X is and how little Dell revealed about its new Adamo this week? Nobody, that's who. Don't be another statistic, slip on some relatively comfortable earbuds and come on over to the Podcast side.

Hosts: Joshua Topolsky, Nilay Patel, Paul Miller
Producer: Trent Wolbe
Song: Cyberdelic -
A lot of our faithful listeners have inquired as to the status of last week's podcast. We regret to inform everyone that we lost the audio just after we were done recording. To be more exact, the Mac Pro at AOL's studio which was recording our rare (and magical) in-person podcast decided to upchuck the boogie and destroy our precious tracks. What that means is we will be skipping that show (it is already the following week) -- though in the next few days we'll bring you the first-ever Engadget Show as well as a proper podcast. Sorry everyone, and thanks for understanding!

Hey everyone, just a quick note to say that the podcast will be slightly delayed this week -- not only are we swamped with news, but Nilay's traveling to NYC for The Engadget Show. Fear not, though -- we'll be live tomorrow at 4PM EST, and the regular podcast will go up on Saturday. See you then!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Engadget Podcast 162 - 09.04.2009

Missed the live show? Hate things happening in real time? We understand exactly how you may or may not feel, and have thrown together this intense, packaged, downloadable version of the show for you to consume. It's kind of like a podcast, except with way more excitement and knowledge. The boys touched on a wide range of news week, pouring out their Snow Leopard early adopter woes and conjecturing on the future of book reading in the highly informative Sony Reader section. There's something here for the whole family!

They said it couldn't be done: could these three men really repeat the on-air magic they conjured during last week's live show? The internet yelled a resounding "yes!" yesterday, as Josh, Paul and Nilay chatted up the PS3 Slim and all other manner of technological trivia. Your hosts' voices charged through internet air waves and filled the hearts of those who tuned in live with irreplaceable joy as podcast history was being made. Oh, you missed it? Don't worry, we've got a static copy of the broadcast right here. It's pretty good.

Another quiet week, podcast fans -- but we were still excited by a few new toys, like the new Creative Zii EGG, the Kodak Zi8, and the Nikon D300s. We also spent some time with the new Sony Walkman X-series, which got us thinking about Sony's fortunes in this brave new world and how the company might need to change -- and speaking of change, both Apple and Palm need to rethink some of their current policies. Oh, and to top it all off, the Wall Street Journal totally whiffed that Apple-at-CES story, and we've got the scoop on how our old friend Ryan Block laid some truth on things. Hm, maybe it wasn't such a quiet week after all.

P.S.- Just Josh and Nilay this time, but we promise the whole band's getting back together soon.
Look out, internet! The Engadget Podcast Audio Talking Show has arrived, complete with technical topics of discussion, talented staff members and a guest of note. Ross Rubin, an analyst with NPD and regular Engadget contributer in his Switched On column, was kind enough to drop by and talk it up with Josh and Paul about the HTC Hero and the future of ebooks -- things that weigh heavily on all of our minds. Nilay's out this week, leaving a gaping hole in all of our hearts, but we promise to get the gang back together real soon.
Paul picked a pretty good week to take a well-deserved vacation -- not a lot's gone down since the podcast crew last cozied up to their microphones. There were some big announcements, though: Comcast loaded up its On Demand Online offerings with a ton of partner announcements and Palm released the Mojo SDK (and the Pre was blocked from iTunes). On top of that, we saw some more shots of that mysterious slim PS3, Microsoft announced plans to open up retail stores, and Google Chrome remained a hot topic of conversation -- for Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates. Josh and Nilay are here to run it all down, settle in and hit play -- it's podcast time.
The podcast is a little late this week, but for good reason -- special guest Michael Gartenberg joins Josh, Paul, and Nilay this week as they sort through the Google-dominated week in news. We've got Chrome OS, the myTouch 3G, some more HTC Hero hands-on time (as well as a Magic flashed with the Hero ROM), and the leaked Sony Ericsson Rachael on tap -- oh, and to top it all off, Sony backtracked huge and released its first true netbook, the VAIO W. It's a bit of a wild one, we won't lie -- buckle up.
Yes, that's the one and only MJ to open the podcast -- this one was recorded just shortly after the Engadget crew had learned the news. Join Josh, Paul, Nilay and special guest Chris Ziegler as they deny the Nokia N97, get angry at the HTC Hero, bargain with Windows 7, depress themselves over the fate of the netbook, and finally learn to accept the Zune HD's Tegra processor. We won't lie -- Engadget Podcast 152 was a struggle, but in the end we all learned a little something about life, love, and forgiveness.

Update: Any further tasteless MJ jokes will be met with a swift ban. Be nice!
It's been one hell of a month, hasn't it? New Palm phones, new iPhones, a big Kindle, that Natal thing... LL Cool J. Yes, a lot has happened in the past few weeks, and it's tough to contain all of that activity inside one teensy podcast -- but we've tried. Join Josh, Paul, and Nilay for another adventurous adventure through time, space, and love as they explore the deeper meanings of the cosmos, the universe, and consumer facing gadgetry. If you don't love the way you feel after listening to this thing, you may already be a zombie.
It's the big one-five-zero, people, and you know what that means: absolutely nothing. We've got news to talk about, after all -- we'll leave the extensive accolades and embarrassing praise for the history books. If you hadn't guessed, this week's show is a bit heavy on the Apple sauce, so the squeamish should turn away before it's too late. Those inclined, however, to dive into MacBook SKUs and wax philosophical about the iPhone as a platform will likely get their money's worth. It'll be fun, we promise.
As you may soon become aware, this week's podcast is about two hours long. Now, we're aware that this might present a difficult scenario for those of you who like to rent out a sensory deprivation room every week to maximize the experience of listening to Josh, Nilay and Paul babble, so here are some usage ideas for this "wild card" hour of listening to be spent in the real world:

Listen to the first half of the podcast twice

Stand in line for the Pre for an hour and then leave

Teach yourself to juggle Wiimotes

Make a recording of yourself lightly chuckling off and on for an hour

Those are just a few of the things we though of off the top of our heads, we're sure you can improve upon these ideas when the moment of truth comes.
We know it's been a long, difficult wait, filled with unspeakable hardships and maybe a bit of Saturday brunch, but the Engadget Podcast is here at last to take away the pain and churn through the insanity of this week's news like a hot knife through imitation butter. It's just Paul and Josh this week, and things should get even crazier next week as E3 descends upon us all, but we promise to get the gang back together real soon to deliver the sort of off-topic rants and delicious non-sequitors you've come to expect from these three beautiful men.

Josh Topolsky and Paul Miller walk into a bar, but the bar is a recording studio.

The bartender, who is the recording engineer, asks, "Why the long faces?"

"Sigh," Paul says, and looks down at his feet. "Nothing but a buncha crummy phone rumors and probably fake slim PS3 pictures this week."

"It's hard to podcast when there's no exciting news to podcast about," says Josh, staring off into the distance.

The door slams open: it's Nilay Patel. "I know what'll cheer you guys up!" he says as he slams three stiff drinks down on the table. "Trashing AT&T about the Slingplayer app!"

Smiles creep over Josh and Paul's faces. They nod, the engineer hits the record button, and history is made: The Engadget Podcast, volume 146.

Update: We added a video feed of your charming hosts from the recording studio after the break. It's definitely an experiment at this stage, so let us know what you think!
Sure, you love the Engadget Podcast... but how much do you love it? Allow the power of your undying devotion to the sounds of Engadget chatter be tested this week as Josh, Paul, and Nilay take a journey through space and time. This week, you'll hear the guys dissect Amazon's Kindle DX launch, wax excited about Android v1.5 (that's Cupcake for us pros), talk openly about Google's netbook designs, and generally rap about a whole bunch of really cool junk. Don't miss it. Seriously.
Bogged down and confused with the latest spate of wild mobile speculations? Relationship troubles clouding your judgment? Lonely? Well Josh, Nilay and Paul -- your jovial (yet often enraged) Engadget Podcast crew -- are back for another installment to help you sort all that out. In a week heavy on rumors (Palm Eos, Microsoft "Pink" and the not-so-nano "iPhone lite") and laden with opinion (Windows 7 RC1, TiVo's sad state of affairs), join the boys as they delve deep into the abyss that is gadgetry. Sure, there might never be a Zunephone, but remember: the beauty is in the journey... or something.
In case you aren't hip to the Twittersphere, Josh, Nilay, Paul and Engadget's own Twitter bot put out their feelers for listener questions this week, and got a lot of great material for discussion. Inquisitive minds wanted to know which wild conjectures these fine men believe about the Zune HD, how particularly evil Time Warner Cable is, and other matters related to Chinese phone manufacturers and The End Times. If you failed to seize upon this opportunity to ask, or found your own question heartlessly ignored, make sure to take advantage of the various avenues of contact listed below and ask away!
